LAMP uses a co-ordinated approach to connect people to medical services and other programs that build personal resources. Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Youth Programs Manager and the Community Health Work team (Youth Focus), and in alignment with program objectives and organizational goals, the Summer Youth Leader will assist with the facilitation of summer program initiatives that engage youth and support the well-being of youth and their families in Central and South Etobicoke.
The incumbent will ensure that all organizational policies are adhered to.
Primary Responsibilities
- Work as a member of the Street Level and Rathburn Area Youth (RAY) program team.
- Collaborate closely with the youth programs team and progra-m partners (City of Toronto) to implement a free social and recreational summer program for youth (ages 10 to 15) in Central and South Etobicoke.
- Co-lead and facilitate the 6-week in-person summer program, utilizing structured recreational activities (e.g., sports), arts-based activities, gardening activities, and civic engagement initiatives.
- Supervise up to 60 participants with support from other youth program staff, program partners, and additional summer program staff.
- Work with the youth program team to solicit donations and support youth-driven fundraising initiatives.
- Partner with the youth programs team to implement two health and wellness fairs, providing youth and families with back-to-school resources.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the guiding principles at LAMP, including Health Promotion, Anti-Oppression, Harm Reduction, and community-based practice.
- Promote a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment where youth can be active decision-makers and partners in the program.
- Build healthy relationships with youth and connect participants with appropriate information and community resources.
- Use effective and professional methods to interact with youth from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, lifestyle, and physical ability backgrounds.
- Maintain positive working relationships with caretakers and key staff both on-site and off-site to ensure safe programs and enhance problem-solving.
- Perform administrative and safety duties, including attendance tracking, daily debriefs, incident report writing, and conducting fire and safety drills.
Required Qualifications
- Must be between the ages of 18 and 30.
- Registered as a full-time student in a recognized post-secondary institution during the past academic year and returning to school in September 2026.
- Post-secondary education in a related field such as Child and Youth Work/Care or Social Service Work/Social Work, and/or a minimum of two years of combined experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating community-based programs.
- Previous experience facilitating and working with youth ages 9-18 in a camp or summer program setting (must be comfortable with water-based activities, e.g., swimming).
- Recent experience working with youth ages 9-18 from various cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, and developmental backgrounds.
- Knowledge of LAMP Community Health Centre, the Central and South Etobicoke communities, and the challenges youth in these communities experience.
- Ability to work well under pressure, manage conflict, tolerate high noise levels, and engage with large groups of youth (up to 50) and staff.
- Food Handling and CPR certification (an asset).
- Solid working knowledge of and ability to navigate a Windows PC environment.
- Proof of a Vulnerable Sector Check is required prior to hiring.
Working Conditions
- A combination of onsite work including working outdoors, and travel to off-site location(s)/community partner locations.
- Must work well under pressure during conflicts, high noise levels, and engage with community members who exhibit challenging, atypical or hostile behaviors and/or communication.
- Frequent standing for extended periods of time and some lifting may be required.
- Ensures full compliance with LAMP’s Health & Safety regulations and LAMP’s policies and procedures.
