Software Engineer, Optimus Production & Service Diagnostics - Tesla

Roughly half your time is expected to be deep product engineering on Optimus diagnostic software; the other half is high-signal operational ownership: unblocking the line, reducing repeat incidents, and converting chaos into durable product and process improvements.

  • Serve as the primary engineering responder for Optimus-related diagnostic issues raised by manufacturing, production, and service
  • Triage escalations quickly: isolate whether the issue is diagnostics, connectivity/auth, robot firmware, station tooling, procedure, or data, then drive to resolution
  • Rapidly ship software fixes and tooling improvements
  • When the root cause is outside diagnostic software, own coordination with firmware, networking, manufacturing software, or hardware partners until the line or service team is unblocked
  • Build and improve diagnostic workflows, dashboards, and automation that prevent the same production/service failure modes from recurring
  • Create runbooks, alert article feedback loops, and self-serve diagnostics so operators escalate less and resolve more
  • Participate in on-call / escalation rotations for Optimus diagnostics and improve the quality of incident response over time
  • Feed field and line learnings into the product roadmap: prioritize features that cut mean time to diagnose and recover
  • Write production-quality full-stack code (React/TypeScript, Python/Go)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of software engineering experience building production systems or operational tooling (or equivalent demonstrated ability)
  • Strong software fundamentals: can design, implement, test, and ship features without hand-holding
  • Proficiency in Python and/or Go, plus comfort with modern web front ends (React/TypeScript preferred)
  • Willingness to be highly available for line-down / service-blocking situations and to work on-site as needed
  • Demonstrated production support or incident-response excellence: you stay calm under pressure, communicate clearly, and drive issues to closure
  • Systems debugging mindset across layers (client, network, auth, backend services, device/robot state)
  • Customer obsession for internal users (technicians, line operators, manufacturing engineers): you measure success by unblocked work, not by whether a ticket was "not our component"
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with production, service, and engineering stakeholders; able to translate between urgency on the floor and engineering depth
  • Experience in manufacturing software, factory automation, vehicle service diagnostics, robotics, embedded systems, CAN/telemetry, or remote device management a nice to have
