Public Health Nurse (Flexible Part Time)

SUMMARY:

The Rice County Health Department is seeking a compassionate and motivated Part-Time Public Health Nurse I to join our team. This position helps improve the health of Rice County residents by providing clinical services, health education, and disease prevention programs in both clinic and community settings.

Public health nurses work across several programs including immunizations, maternal and child health, WIC, reproductive health services, community health screenings, communicable disease control, and emergency preparedness.

This role is ideal for a nurse interested in community-focused care, prevention, and flexible part-time work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clinical Services
  • Participate in public health clinics serving individuals and families across Rice County

Maternal & Child Health / WIC

  • Conduct WIC certifications and recertifications according to program policies
  • Support and promote breastfeeding as the preferred infant feeding method
  • Provide education and guidance to families on maternal and child health topics

Public Health & Prevention

  • Assist with communicable disease investigation and follow-up
  • Provide health education to individuals and groups
  • Maintain follow-up contact with clients referred by other agencies
  • Support health promotion and risk reduction initiatives

Program & Administrative Support

  • Ensure client documentation and program forms are completed accurately and submitted promptly
  • Participate in quality improvement activities
  • Assist with emergency preparedness and response activities as needed
  • Assist with Family Planning and reproductive health services, including client intake, medical histories, lab screenings, and contraceptive services
  • Administer immunizations and TB skin tests to children and adults in both clinic and community settings
  • Explain vaccine benefits and potential side effects and obtain informed consent prior to administration
  • Perform phlebotomy services for community health screenings through the Healthy Living Labs program

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Knowledge of current public health nursing principles and processes.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, physical assessment and basic pharmacology.
  • Knowledge of human systems (wellness, illness growth and development, basic nutrition)
  • Knowledge of prescribed treatments and medical interventions; ability to effectively monitor and document the patient’s treatment progress and response; ability to refer to appropriate providers as indicated
  • Knowledge of chart documentation requirements, State and Federal laws that govern release of information
  • Knowledge of the Nursing Code of Ethics

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to operate basic office equipment i.e. computer, fax, copier
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • BSN or Associates Degree in Nursing with a license to practice in Kansas. Public Health Nursing experience preferred
  • Ability to interact effectively and sensitively with individuals from diverse backgrounds bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
  • Ability to interact effectively with other staff in the department and other health professionals in the community
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, be flexible, and sensitive to response in changing situations and needs in the work environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and written
  • Establish, maintain and foster positive working relationships with co workers

PHYSICIAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Public health workers are subject to be called to a public health emergency therefore it is important that individuals meet these physical requirements)

  • Essential functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for physical activity such as standing, sitting, squatting, twisting of upper body, climbing, kneeling, and stooping, reaching, walking, occasional lifting 30 – 50 pounds.
